Today we take a journey on the Settle-Carlisle Railway – one of the most scenic and impressive railways in the UK! The last great mainline railway to be built and completed for passenger travel in 1876, the building of the railway present tremendous challenges to traverse the landscape.
With 21 viaducts, 14 tunnels and 72 miles of track, it was advertised as the most picturesque route to Scotland, and the Victorian and Edwardian travelling public took it to their hearts. The route takes us over the impressive Ribblehead Viaduct and through the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor.
Step back in time and enjoy a cream tea in the elegant surroundings of Blackpool Tower Ballroom. One of the truly iconic venues of the 19th century, admire the intricately decorated ceiling, twinkling chandeliers, uniquely sprung dance floor and ornate balconies. Take a turn on the dance floor to the sounds of the famous Wurlitzer Organ or sit and enjoy the magical atmosphere of this most special venue.
Our included excursion today takes us to the beautiful Lake District. The spectacular landscapes have inspired so many writers and poets, and we'll start the day in Bowness-on-Windermere – one of the region's most popular destinations. The village lies on the shores of Lake Windermere and is filled with charming shops and quaint tearooms.
We continue to bustling Ambleside at the head of the lake, where there will be free time before we make our way to the pretty village of Grasmere.
Situated at the very heart of the Lake District, this charming village is famous for its literary connections and is home to the tiny Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, which lies in the grounds of the parish church.
Return home.

You will stay for four nights at the 4-star Imperial Hotel in Blackpool
Location: North Promenade, Blackpool, FY1 2HB
An integral part of Blackpool’s culture, the glamorous 4-star Imperial Hotel is an iconic, Victorian building boasting an unrivalled position on the seafront, and for over a century, the hotel has welcomed a host of royalty, politicians, statesmen and stars of both the stage and screen, including The Beatles. The delightful Palm Court restaurant is full of grandeur and opulence, with incredible sea views and a seasonal menu of locally sourced produce and fresh ingredients. For a more relaxed setting, the historic No.10 bar offers comforting and delicious food, and an extensive selection of drinks. Guests can also unwind in the hotel’s leisure club, complete with a gym, swimming pool and spa facilities (extra charges may apply, please pay locally). Interestingly, beneath the hotel, a restoration project is taking place to uncover the ornate Burmantofts tiles of the Turkish Baths which were installed in 1898 but covered up in the 1950s. There are few hotels in the northwest that can compare with the Imperial in terms of history.Need further information? Fill in our enquiry form and we'll get back to you as soon as we can
