Today is the highlight of our trip as we travel by coach to Bury and the East Lancs Steam Railway where you will board your carriage behind the world-famous Flying Scotsman locomotive for a nostalgic trip (approx 1-hour 30mins) through the Lancashire countryside.
The legend of the locomotive...
Built way back in 1923 and dreamed up by Sir Nigel Gresley, the Flying Scotsman turned heads with clever innovations like corridor tenders – meaning the crew could swap shifts without ever hitting the brakes!
Record-breaking feats!
In 1928, the Flying Scotsman became the first steam locomotive to chug non-stop from London to Edinburgh, covering a whopping 392 miles! Then in 1934, it broke another record by officially hitting 100 mph – the first steam engine ever to do so!
Still steaming strong
Saved from the scrapheap in 1963 by passionate railway enthusiast Alan Pegler, the Flying Scotsman lives on as a proud symbol of the golden age of steam. And, in 2023, she celebrated her 100th birthday!
We return to the hotel where the remainder of the afternoon and evening are free to enjoy.
After a leisurely breakfast, we have the morning free to enjoy the attractions of Blackpool before our journey home by coach. If you have chosen the join at the hotel option, you can make your own way home at your leisure.
Please note, that due to the short duration of the tour, a smaller piece of luggage per passenger should be taken as you will be required to carry your own luggage to and from the hotel reception. Your driver will be responsible for moving your luggage to the hotel reception on arrival and from the hotel reception on departure.
